Turns out, my system slaps waaaay too hard on some songs i.

Are Two Subwoofers Better than One?

My Jeeps I recently installed 2 kicker comp 10″ in my 98 jeep cherokee. I purchased an 8 guage wiring kit along with my subs. It came with power wire, ground, speaker wire, fuse, and remote wire. You connect the power wire to the positive of the battery and then make sure your fuse is within 18inches of the battery.

Then i ran the power wire through the firewall and down the driver side floor panel to the rear of my car. If you have a upgraded head-unit with rca pre-amp outputs you just connect your RCA’s and follow the same path as your wiring.

If you have a car audio subwoofer that is not used in your car, you may want to install it in your home to enhance your home stereo or theater system. This is a relatively easy .

This would add only 2. To advise on alternative strategies is a bit tricky as a I don’t know how you have your amps hooked up to the rest of your car system, and b I don’t know what your expectations are in terms of bass volume. From my point of view, if your system is hooked up correctly and working to its capacity, I would be quite satisfied with W of bass power inside a car. But for all I know you might be a youngster wanting to build a ‘doof doof’ system that will annoy the hell out of anyone within a block’s radius of your car!

Before spending any more money, you need to establish whether your kicker amp is delivering its full W before its overload trips. This is difficult to do without electronic instruments and knowledge. You could take it to a car audio specialist, and they could probably check it for you pretty easily and maybe free if they thought you might be a potential customer for more equipment ;. If you’re not getting the full output before it trips, it may be the way you have hooked it up or the way you’re using it e.

It could also be a fault in the amp. Again, the specialists should be able to advise you on this. But if it is delivering W without overloading, then you obviously want a much louder bass sound, and that’s going to be expensive. You need to understand that human perception of loudness is a logarithmic function that’s why we measure loudness and power with decibels [dB], a logarithmic ratio. To get what you would perceive as a doubling of loudness, you need a 10dB increase in amplifier power [and the speaker s also need to be rated to take that!

So if you’re getting your full W without overload, and you want something twice as loud, you will need a W 4kW amp!

How do you hook up a new car stereo? Well it helps if you have a repair manual for your car so that you can reference the wiring schematic for the stereo connections it will eliminate a lot of guess work. Subwoofers are omnidirectional, meaning that the subwoofer can project sound in all directions, unlike speakers that mostly project sound in the direction they are facing. Start by placing your subwoofer near the front of your home theater system. A few feet to the left or right of the screen is a good starting point.

Lemonslush, I dont mean to call you out on this but if you have more insight on the topic I am interested. A bit of background I have 4 sealed 12″ subs, 3 of the 4 are DIY “car subs” and one is a paradigm sub I started with the Paradigm, then had an old beater car sub sitting around from about 20 years ago wired it in with a cheeseball HTIB plate amp and was immediately impressed with the better room response but not with the output. The cheeseball setup got replaced with an Alpine type R and plate amp, in fairness the Type R models well.

A few years later I added a couple of kenwood subs that were on a blowout sale and something of an impulse buy, they model poorly and I was second guessing them until I hooked them up and got things dialed in. With a bit of setup they sound as good as the Paradigm and alpine and have respectable output.

How to hook up a subwoofer to a stereo system Hint: You don’t necessarily need a receiver with subwoofer output jacks. Subs can provide a foundation to the sound that few speakers can muster on their own.

Step 6 – Install the Subwoofer. Your home subwoofer will now work like a charm in your car. Hook the amplifier up to the subwoofer channel on your car’s stereo head unit and enjoy the bass.

It would be great if every room was designed with surround sound in mind, but alas, it isn’t. Still, there are some good rules to go by. The diagram below shows the ideal placement for speakers in a 7.

Notice how the speakers are perfectly set up for one seating location, the elusive “sweet spot”. Because most people are not hermits watching movies in solitude, you will probably have a variety of seating locations. When placing your speakers, you will need to decide if you want to optimize your system for one location or, as we prefer, place speakers so that individuals in a variety of positions can experience good quality surround sound.

Whether it’s an installation that might not have gone as planned, or a random problem that comes out of nowhere. Here is a list of your common car stereo problems, symptoms and solutions to help get your stereo up and running! Many Jeeps and Chevrolet systems have a data signal wire that carries a very low voltage signal that tells the OEM Head Unit when to turn on, however; it is not compatible with aftermarket units. If you have a voltage meter or a test light, test the ground black , constant 12v yellow , and accessory 12v red wires to make see if you have the correct voltage in the correct wires, as well as a good ground.

Constant will always be 12v, whether or not your car is on.

Finally, the most complicated but best sounding is to connect your stereo to a processor – most can make do with speaker level inputs, so you won’t need to replace the stereo – then connect this via rca to an amp, then the sub.

But what the manufacturer is not showing you is the bandwidth vs. Quality of bass and how well it integrates into a system is paramount. If I have to sacrifice a bit of extension and SPL to achieve this, so be it. The Set-Up I left my EP towards the left front corner behind my couch as it has been for the past 3 years. I placed one EP on top of it and the other EP diagonally located towards the back right of the room. Luckily the distance between both EP s was relatively equal to the primary listening area making it much easier to integrate them and not have to worry about bass cancellations due to mismanaged time alignment between the two subs.

This review of the JL Audio subwoofer was an opportunity to audition one of the new line of affordable subwoofers that JL Audio designed for the home. These subs are made in the USA and are individually verified and tested at the factory. This subwoofer took a little more effort to set up than other subs I have reviewed in the last few years.

The preferred method of connecting a subwoofer is through the Subwoofer Output (labeled as ‘SUB OUT’ or ‘SUBWOOFER’) of a receiver using an LFE (an acronym for Low-Frequency Effects) cable. Almost all home theater receivers (or processors) and some stereo receivers have this type of subwoofer output.

Some stereo shops have huge spools of wire available by the foot.

Like other speakers, subwoofers built for the car environment should work well in the home environment. The opposite is not necessarily true because home speakers and subwoofers are not designed for the harsh conditions of temperature, humidity and sunlight that car speakers are.

And the only way to make this a bearable experience every single time is by listening to some really nice and soothing music. There are days though that you just want to pump up the sound system of your car, but end up disappointed as you do not get to listen to the bass sounds from your Bose stereo. The best way to address this problem would be to add a subwoofer to your already installed Bose stereo.

Purchase a subwoofer that would be suitable to the already fitted Bose stereo system in your car. After market sound systems come in different shapes and sizes. Finding a subwoofer that would actually be a match in size and power to the currently installed Bose stereo system in your car may be a little difficult. This is especially true if there are not enough shops that sell after market car stereo systems in your area. Your best bet for this case would be to shop around on the Web to find the best fit.

Aside from the subwoofer, it is recommended that you acquire a separate amplifier so as to maximize the sound output of the subwoofer. Do the preparations for adding a subwoofer to a Bose stereo. Always make sure that you cut off the power supply that goes through all the electrical components of your car by disengaging the ground cable first.

Set up the subwoofer in the desired location of your car. Select the best location to put in the subwoofer.

By Adrienne Owens As a car owner, sometimes you may find yourself in some tricky situations. Try picturing out this particular situation. You have ditched your car, and it had very good car speakers. You are not planning to dispose these speakers, and you would wish to convert them into home speakers.

Connect using a line-out connection. This type of connection will send a nonamplified, low-frequency signal to your subwoofer. This is for powered subwoofers only (subwoofers with built-in amplification that you plug into the power outlet).

Even if you have high-end speakers and amplification, a subwoofer can add the deep bass that you may be missing. Connect using a line-out connection. This type of connection will send a nonamplified, low-frequency signal to your subwoofer. This is for powered subwoofers only subwoofers with built-in amplification that you plug into the power outlet.

Turn the subwoofer “On” on your receiver or preamplifer menu. Connect using speaker-level connections. Some receivers do not have a Sub Out jack, and passive subwoofers require external amplification and, therefore, a speaker level connection. Correctly match corresponding speakers left, right and polarities positive, negative.

Connect speaker cable from the speaker outputs on your subwoofer to the corresponding left and right speakers. Again, be careful to match the polarities. Turn the subwoofer “Off” and set speakers to “Large” on your menu. Tip LFE stands for “low-frequency effects” and is a home theater term, which relates to the “. Using a connection labeled LFE won’t direct low frequencies to the subwoofer for nondigital surround sound formats.
